The Sultan Hassan Mosque and Madrassa is one of the largest mosques in Egypt. It was built by Sultan Hassan Ibn Al-Nasir Muhammad Ibn Qalawun in the period between (757-764 A.H/ 1356-1363 A.D). This mosqe is located at the end of Mohammed Ali Street in front of Al-Rifai Mosque in Salah al-din Square.
In the center of the mosque is an open court with a fountain of water used for ablution, covered with a large wooden dome that rests on eight columns of marble. The courtyard is surrounded by four Iwans, the largest of which is the qibla Iwan, which is unparalleled in Islamic architecture.
