North of the Temple of Amun at Karnak is an open-air museum displaying some of the spectacular finds that were made in the temple. As Karnak’s importance grew, many pharaohs contributed to the temple with their own monuments. With time, some of their monuments were dismantled and re-used by successive kings. These monuments were discovered during excavation of the temple as filling for some structures or buried underneath the massive pylons, or walls of the temple.
Among the monuments on display is Hatshapsut’s sacred barque shrine, known as the Chapelle Rouge, made to house the statue of the gods during festivals. The White Chapel of Senusret I is also on display with delicately carved hieroglyphs that demonstrate the extraordinary skill of craftsmen of the Middle Kingdom.
