Karnak Temple is the largest ancient temple in the world and the best-preserved temple in Egypt. It was located on the east bank in the heart of the ancient capital city of Thebes and was called Ipet-Isut or “The Most Select of Places.” Many rulerscontributed to its construction from the Middle Kingdomthrough to the Roman Period, although most of its monuments date to the New Kingdom.

The temple is dedicated to the Theban triad with Amun-Ra as the main deity, alongwith his wife Mut and their son Khonsu. Montu and Ptah are also venerated at Karnak. Many festivals and celebrations occurred throughout the year celebrating the deities. In the Opet Festival, the statues of the deities were placed in sacred barquesand paraded through the streets to the temple of Luxor.

Although many additions were made to the temple over the years, the main axis of the temple is oriented west to east. Many of the greatest rulers of Egyptadded statues and obelisks to the temple and the walls are inscribed with their victories and feats.
