Dynasty 20

1069 BC

The birth names of most of the Kings of this dynasty were Ramesses, such as Ramesses III, until Ramesses XI. This is the reason to name it the Ramesside dynasty. Upon the death of the last pharaoh of the Nineteenth Dynasty, Queen Tawosret, Egypt descended into a period of unrest, until King Sethnakht managed to gain control and establish the Twentieth Dynasty. Sethnakht was followed by a series of strong rulers who conducted a number of military expeditions against the Libyans and Sea People. One of those rulers was Ramesses III who is the son of Sethnakht. Under his rule, Egypt finally stopped the Sea People who at this point in time had devastated all Mediterranean cultures, included the Hittites. However, for Egypt this came at the prize of losing her role as the last remaining super-power. After Ramses III, Egypt faced an economic decline and a number of weak kings came to the throne who in the end did not even rule from Thebes anymore: they lived in the military headquarters of the city of Piramesse in the Delta, and their tombs are unknown.
