The Saqqara necropolis was one of the main cemeteries for the ancient capital of Memphis. Among all the pyramid sites, Saqqara is especially interesting because it has well-preserved monuments from all periods of history, to the Christian Period. The necropolis was so crowded with burials that many of its monuments were re-used several times. Saqqara has a number of pyramids as well as many tombs between the discovered and the undiscovered so far.
Saqqara was a favored site by the pharaohs from the 1st Dynasty until the Roman Period. As such, many significant monuments exist from all periods, including burials and cult centers. Evidence suggests that even the earliest pharaohs of Egypt likely built monuments at Saqqara that unfortunately did not survive.Among the prominent monuments at Saqqara are: the first pyramid in Egypt belonging to Djoser, the pyramid of Unas with the first funerary texts in history inscribed on its burial chamber walls, a number of magnificently decorated tombs, and the burial place of the sacred Apis bulls.
In late 2018, two major discoveries were made at Saqqara indicating that the site still has more secrets to reveal. The finds included rare scarabs and a wonderfully decorated intact 5th Dynasty tomb.
