Mohammed Ali Mosque

The mosque of Mohammed Ali is located inside the Citadel of Salah Al-Din in Cairo. It was built by Mohammed Ali (1830-1848 A.D) on the site of old Mumluk buildings. It is also known as the "Al-Alabaster Mosque" in relation to the interior and exterior Marble decoration that covers its walls. The two minarets of the mosque are the highest in Egypt with a height of 84 meters each.

The outer open court contains a copper clock tower, which was given by Louis Philippe of France to Mohammed Ali Pasha (1262 A.H/ 1845 A.D) in return of an obelisk which was standing in front of Luxor temple (nowadays in Concorde square in Paris).

There are two pulpits inside the mosque one of them is made of wood decorated in green color (the original one)and the other is made of Marble.

The mausoleum of Mohammed Ali Pasha is located in the southwestern corner of the mosque as his body was transferred from Hosh al Basha in 1857.
