Al-Nasir Mohamed Ibn Qalawun Mosque

The Mamluk sultan, Al-Nasir Mohamed Ibn Qalawun decreed that this mosque be built in (718 A.H /1318 A.D). After it was completed he demolished it and rebuilt it in (735 A.H /1335 A.D). Al-Nasir Mosque is located in the southern section of the Salah Al-Din Citadel. It was used by the Mamluk occupants of the Citadel and was cherished by the sultans of Mamluk period.

The mosque is among the most prominent monuments within the Citadel due to its unique style that merges many architectural traditions. The tops of its two minarets and dome were once covered in green tiles, and are influenced by an Eastern Islamic style.

Inside the dome is a bar of Qur'anic verses and the titles of Al-Nasir Mohamed and the date of renovation of the mosque (735 A.H /1335 A.D).

The ornate minbar (pulpit) is made out of wood, inlaid with ivory and mother-of-pearl, inscribed with the name of King Farouk (1949 A.D).

The mosque is also characterized by its roof, which is decorated with beautiful geometric shapes.

The mosque was used as storage and prison during the British occupation of (1882 A.D), which led to its destruction, and was subsequently restored (1948 A.D).
