Nubia had been a major destination of trade and military campaigns since the beginnings of the history in Egypt: In the Old Kingdom, trade routes were established and Nubian resources were collected, the Middle Kingdom plastered the area of the 2nd cataract with fortresses and during the New Kingdom, Nubia had become part of Imperial Egypt. During the 25th Dyn., this changed, and Kushite kings such as Piankhi and Taharqa ruled for a short period of time, adopting the Egyptian way of life with a distinct Nubian flavour. Despite being powerful enough to rule the entire country, the Assyrians challenged the newcomers and successfully invaded Egypt.
